High dynamic range photography resources, what is HDR, why is it popular, how to make your own HDR images and some great examples and galleries.


What is HDR Photography?

The simple answer is when you blend an underexposed photo, a correctly exposed photo and an over-exposed photo together using software to create an image that shows a greater range between the lightest and darkest areas. The problem with HDR images is that they can't be display on standard computer screen. That is where tone mapping comes in; tone mapping is the process of converting HDR images into a viewable format. Tone mapping is done with computer software such as Photomatix or Photoshop.

Why is HDR photography so popular?

Well, when you see a great example it will blow your socks off! They really have a bizarre quality that makes them look slightly out of this world, kind of like a video game with that 3d effect.
