A comprehensive review of the canvas printing service offerered by the Brilliant Prints company.

Brilliant Prints are a specialist canvas printing company operating in Brisbane, Australia. I was keen to try out their service as I was fairly impressed by the quality of the information on their website and the positive comments of their customers.

Also, I have found that canvas prints from local photo stores have been disappointing due to washed out colours, lack of colour and sharpness.

The photo

A friend had requested a frangipani photo for their house. So I cropped a photo I had taken into a 1:2 panorama, adjusted colour, contrast and sharpness in Photoshop and saved the file, which turned out to be 8mb in size. The finished print size is 18 x 36 inches (20x40" including wrapping around frame).

Ordering Online

I used the Brilliant Prints online ordering system and found it very straight forward. You simply upload your file, choose your options such as type of wrap, laminating, size, frame thickness and colour; which are all explained in detail; view the online proof; then enter your delivery details. Shortly after ordering I received a confirmation email and an explanation of what happens next. Six days later I received an email letting me know my print had been shipped and a tracking number.

The Canvas Print

The canvas print arrived packaged in cardboard and bubble wrap with plenty of ‘Fragile' stickers on the outside. First impressions were ‘Wow'! This canvas had amazing colour and sharpness. The main issues I have had with canvas prints I have had purchased through photo stores has been washed out colours. The colour of the Brilliant Prints canvas was amazing, lush bright colour. Sharpness was excellent, keep in mind this is also affected by the quality of the original photo, size of file, sharpness of lens etc. The quality of the folder corners was excellent, the stretching was nice and tight. The wooden frame is a good size, nice and sturdy and the canvas is wrapped around it very consistently.

Conclusion

I was very impressed by Brilliant Prints. Their website is easy to use, the ordering process was straightforward and the canvas print was excellent. I will definitely be using Brilliant Prints for my future canvas printing and will gladly recommend them to friends. I would definitely recommend giving them a try, particularly if you have been unimpressed by canvas prints you have had printed elsewhere.

Keep in mind that a lot depends on the photo you are printing. The better the picture, the better the print. Aim for a well exposed photo taken with a camera with decent resolution and a decent lens.
