North Queensland & Vanuatu Photo Gallery
North Queensland is home to some of Australia's most famous natural attractions: The Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system, and as such is a great spot for diving, snorkelling or a tropical island holiday. It also happens to be a World Heritage Area. A great spot to base yourself while exploring the reef is Port Douglas, a hip little holiday town. Nearby, the Daintree Rainforest is just across the bay from Port Douglas and there are plenty of tours to take you there.
The Daintree is also a world heritage area and is home to the largest range of plants and animals in the world. The rainforest also happens to be 135 million years old, wow. If you are visiting the Daintree I would recommend getting one of the smaller tours that allows you to really experience the Daintree. We were lucky enough to kayak along the beaches at Cape Tribulation and swim in the crystal clear rivers, keeping a careful eye out for crocodiles!
Vanuatu is an island nation located in the South Pacific Island, 1750 kilometres east of Northern Australia. Vanuatu has been voted the happiest nation in the world, and after being there, I would have to agree, they sure are a cheery bunch. Vanuatu is surrounded by postcard perfect blue water and is one of the world's great diving destinations. Vanuatu is a great spot for a relaxing island holiday, but don't forget that it is also a third world country.
I've been told that in Vanuatu, the local prison is surrounded by a flimsy old fence, and when the inmates play soccer, if the ball happens to bounce over the fence, they just jump the fence, grab the ball and climb back in! Not sure if that's true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me.
